James Gray's practice is predominantly concerned with complex cross-border patent litigation for a variety of clients in the technology, media, telecommunications and life sciences sectors. Aside from litigation, James also advises clients in relation to other IP matters such as licensing and a variety of portfolio issues.

James advises clients on both assertion of patents and defence against infringement claims. His work for clients in the telecommunications sector involves both standard essential and non-essential technologies, and he advises on issues such as FRAND licences and competition law. Most of James' cases involve international businesses simultaneously litigating in several countries, so he has extensive experience with international clients and the demands of coordinating multinational legal teams from different jurisdictions.

Pro bono James has represented families of the Manchester Arena terrorist attack and advised victims of human trafficking on compensation claims under the CICA scheme.

James trained at Hogan Lovells, during which he took seats in Intellectual Property, Commercial Litigation, Restructuring and Insolvency and the Tech Hub, assisting technology companies navigate emerging laws around disruptive technologies.

Representative experience

Acting for a major innovator pharmaceuticals company in in invalidity and infringement proceedings in the High Court.

Representing HTC Corporation in High Court litigation comprising technical validity/infringement trials and FRAND proceedings regarding a portfolio of alleged UMTS SEPs.

Acting for a large telecommunications company in an ICC Arbitration concerning FRAND and competition law.

Defending Vodafone in High Court litigation against IPCom concerning infringement and validity of multiple alleged LTE SEPs and related FRAND proceedings.
