Tackling inequalities highlighted by COVID-19

The pandemic has highlighted the inequalities faced by many across Mexico, including poverty and homelessness.

In Mexico City we launched a knitting campaign to donate to those in need with colleagues meeting via Zoom to knit together and have informal catch-ups. The knitted scarves were added to survival kits which included food and other basic supplies. Due to the critical situation in Mexico, these kits were crucial to the survival of many people living on the streets to help them deal as best as possible with influenza, COVID-19, and the winter season.

In Monterrey, families kept vigil outside hospitals for their loved ones suffering from COVID-19 with little information and without food and comfort. Colleagues from our Monterrey office worked in alliance with Colegio CEDVAC to prepare food to be distributed to family members waiting outside hospitals and health centers. We worked on this project over a period of six months supporting people in distress by providing one of their basic needs.

In alliance with Casa Monarca, an organization that provides humanitarian support to migrants and refugees, we launched a campaign to educate colleagues about the hostilities faced by newcomers arriving in Mexico. Understanding these topics and their relevance is crucial to continue our advancement towards eradicating discriminatory practices. We also worked with Casa Monarca to prepare survival kits for migrants and those seeking political asylum.
