Hogan Lovells discusses "solar mamas" at UNESCO Africa Day

On 10 October, the sounds of African drums lured visitors to Mönchengladbach's city center.

More than 500 pupils from the Lower Rhine region joined business representatives and politicians at this year's UNESCO Africa Day, organized by the UNESCO Berufskolleg Volksgartenstraße. The event gives schools, public organizations, and NGOs the opportunity to present local projects aimed at achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) - with a focus on the African continent - and to introduce these projects to the wider public.

Hogan Lovells also attended the event to discuss our ongoing global partnership with Barefoot College. As representatives of SDG 5 - Gender Equality, we showed visitors how to fight poverty with solar energy; at Barefoot College, women from rural regions around the world are trained as solar engineers. After their successful training, the "solar mamas" bring solar energy to their villages, ensuring greater independence from the electricity grid, which is still poorly developed in some areas. We told the students about our cooperation with Barefoot College, and the visitors learned how to build their own small solar cars and solar lanterns.
