Yasmin Waljee OBE, is responsible for shaping the International Pro bono Practice at Hogan Lovells. Her appointment in 1997 was the first of its kind in Europe and her appointment to the partnership was the first such appointment in the UK.

Yasmin Waljee is an expert in the field of human rights with a focus on victims and reparations work.  She has practiced in this area at Hogan Lovells for 27 years, starting on Privy Council appeals against the death penalty and working on many ground breaking and law changing matters.  She has expertise in human trafficking and sexual violence, including formerly sitting on the Advisory Panel to the UK's Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner. She is also a Council of Europe member of the network of lawyers on anti-human trafficking (GRETA),  Trustee of the IBA Human Rights Institute, Director of the Global Board of Equality Now and Trustee of the Chancery Lane Project and Advisory Board member to the Patchwork Foundation  

Yasmin has long believed that the ingenuity of enterprise could be harnessed to promote a sustainable future for the next generation. She has been able to harness the specialist practice areas and expertise of the firm to combine this with experience of the social impact movement to address the complex needs of the society and ensuring access to justice.

She is a co-founder for the firm's Social Enterprise and Social Finance practice: HL BaSE   

Yasmin is the Vice-Chair of Mosaic, the HRH Prince of Wales led initiative to support young Muslims and their peers growing up in deprived areas whilst breaking down the barriers and suspicions with British Society.

Yasmin received an awards for the most inspirational woman of the year, named in the 50 most influential women in the law;  Asian Woman of the Year and Woman Solicitor of the Year, The Times.

In 2010, Yasmin was awarded an OBE in the HM Queen's New Year Honours list.

 

Representative experience

Advice on issues relating to Article 2 Right to Life, reparations for victims of crime and terrorism, sexual violence in conflict and related UN Thematic Mechanisms.

Advice on financing of reparations for victims of war crimes and terrorism, with reference to, financial investigations and national administrative reparations schemes; for example UK - CICA scheme.

Advice on anti-human trafficking and related Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings and Palermo Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking.
