Webinar - Regulation of Lootboxes, Virtual Fantasy Sports and New Forms of Gaming

The new German State Treaty on Gambling (GlüStV 2021) is set to enter into force on 1 July 2021. The planned regulatory framework for online slot games and online poker brings some long sought-after legal certainty. Yet, questions remain: what is the exact status of ‘gambling-like’ elements in videogames, such as lootboxes? Will they be treated in a similar way as in Belgium or in the Netherlands, leading to court cases and substantial fines? How will virtual fantasy sports be regulated? Where does the political and regulatory debate on these issues stand, and how are decisions taken?

The regulation of gambling and ‘gambling-like’ elements is thus not completed with the new State Treaty. On the contrary, it moves on to new questions, which need to be addressed. For an assessment of the status quo and upcoming developments, we invite you to our next webinar on 14 January 2020 at 3 p.m. (CET).

This 45-minute policy and regulatory update will include a short assessment of the current legal situation of new forms of gaming as well as an outlook to their future regulation and upcoming political decisions. There will also be room for any questions you may have.
