Africa is one of the world's fasting growing emerging markets. It presents great opportunity and great risk. Our Africa mining team is ideally positioned to assist in successfully managing the legal, regulatory, and political challenges which are inherent in doing business in this sector on the African continent. We frequently advise on all manner of mining-related matters across the continent including complex cross-border M&A, the development and construction of projects, dispute resolution, capital raising and financing transactions, mining health and safety, ESG and regulatory matters pertaining to licensing and local ownership, employment and industrial relations, and offtake arrangements.

Representative experience

Advising China Baowu Steel Group on its investment in the Simandou mining and infrastructure (rail and port) project in the Republic of Guinea, reportedly the largest project of its kind in Africa at the time.

Advised Allied Gold Corp on the acquisition of the Bonikro Gold Mine located in Cote d’Ivoire.

Advised Allied Gold Corp on its acquisition of Endeavour Resources Inc, which owns an 85% interest in Agbaou Gold Operations SA, which in turn owns the Agbaou Open Pit Gold Mine (located nearly 200km north of the port city of Abidjan in Cote d'Ivoire) from Endeavour Gold Corporation.

Advised Harmony Gold Mining Company Ltd. in their takeover, in an all-stock offer, for all the outstanding shares of Gold Fields Limited.

Acting for Allied Gold on an ICC arbitration concerning the ownership / control of a Cypriot SPV holding a concession in Egypt and related international strategy.

A global manufacturing company in securing battery metals for the energy transition, including offtake arrangement, financing of a mining project, and investment in project development.

Vale Nouvelle Calédonie, a nickel and cobalt ore extraction and production company, on the creation of a joint venture with Trafigura and the local authorities of New Caledonia for the acquisition of Vale Nouvelle Calédonie.

Represented the mining industry before the South Africa Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources with regard to the Mine Health and Safety Act and the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act.

Represented AngloGold Ashanti in a Clean Water Act (CWA) case filed by the Sierra Club and Mineral Policy Center.
