Having served as a U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) judge for a decade, Theodore (Ted) Essex brings a wealth of knowledge to our Intellectual Property practice and clients around the globe. He has been hailed as an unofficial ambassador to intellectual property lawyers and judges throughout the United States, Asia, and Europe, and has handled some of the most important Section 337 intellectual property infringement proceedings involving the world's most valuable and renowned companies.

Ted is the only individual who has served as the president for both the Pauline Newman and Giles S. Rich American Inns of Court, which focus on the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the most significant intellectual property issues. Before joining the ITC, he gained experience as a trial lawyer for the U.S. Air Force and as a trial attorney and public defender in Ohio.

In addition, Ted is a professional lecturer in law at the George Washington University Law School and co-authored a chapter on ITC Mediation in the American Bar Association's (ABA) book about alternative dispute resolution. He is also a registered solicitor in England and Wales. Ted's appointments as co-moderator on multiple panels, including the ABA International Section Annual Meeting, are a testament to his sought-after judicial perspective. In addition to acting as a panelist at the esteemed 62nd Annual IP Conference at John Marshall Law School, Ted serves on the advisory board of the Center for Intellectual Property, Information & Privacy Law after being personally invited by Director of the center and Professor Daryl Lim and Senior Advisor Don Dunner.

Representative experience

Served as a lecturer in law at George Washington Law School, and as a legal adviser to the Sedona Conference.

Gave lectures on patent law and the ITC in China, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, and throughout the United States.

Taught the intellectual property sections of the state bars of Georgia, Texas, Utah, and New Jersey.

Served on panels for the ABA and American Conference Institute, and appeared at more than half a dozen law schools as a lecturer.

Served on the Advisory Council for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

Selected to deliver the Patent and Trademark Office Society Education Committee's lecture, "The Lighted Taper: A Patent and Trademark Office Society Distinguished Lecture Series."

Spoke on intellectual property at the 2011 International Judges Conference in Brussels, Belgium.

Served as the only ITC judge on the judicial panel at the 7th Annual Advanced Patent Law Institute, held at the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Served as a panelist on the use of expert witnesses for the New York State Trial Lawyers Association.
