As a very well-known figure in the Spanish tax market, Miguel Angel has headed the Hogan Lovells Madrid tax practice since setting up the office in 2004. Miguel Angel moved out of tax administration in 2004 after a long successful career in which, among others, was the head of the Cabinet office of the Minister of Economy and Finance and Deputy Prime Minister, as well as Director General of Taxation, being responsible for some of the most significant amendments on the Spanish tax legislation and International tax treaties signed by Spain. Miguel Angel is widely recognized as one of the leading practitioners representing banks, shipyards and film-producers in asset-finance structures since the beginning of this century, having counsel structures with an aggregate value of more than 2 billion euros.His leadership in this field brought him to advise on the definition of the current tax lease regime approved by the Spanish government in 2013.

On his litigation experience, it is remarkable his milestone success in the Case T-719/13 regarding the annulment of the C(2013) 4426 final Decision of the Commission related to the tax regime applicable to certain finance lease agreements also known as the former Spanish tax lease system which concerned 273 transactions for a total value of Euros 8.7 billion. His vast knowledge in the Spanish tax environment and his understanding of the whys and wherefores of Spanish tax regulations, Miguel Angel has taken to assist private clients in their wealth tax planning structures and to defend their interests before the Spanish tax Administration and Courts.
