Hogan Lovells is pleased to announce that senior associate Giovanni Zarra has been appointed by the Republic of San Marino as a member of the ICSID panels of arbitrators and conciliators for a six-year term.

The International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) - one of the five organizations of the World Bank Group - is the world’s leading institution devoted to international investment dispute settlement. It has extensive experience in this field, having administered the majority of all international investment cases. The ICSID Convention entitles each Member State to designate up to four persons for each Panel.

Commenting on the appointment, Giovanni Zarra said: “I’m incredibly grateful for this extremely prestigious designation to strengthen the arbitration global outlook.”

Focusing on international (both commercial and investment) arbitration and international litigation, Giovanni is a full professor of public and private international law and international litigation at the University of Naples Federico II. Besides acting in international disputes, Giovanni has constantly advised clients (both public and private entities) on issues of investment law, trade law, environmental law, human rights, shipping, and maritime law. In his academic experience, Giovanni authored five books (on international law and arbitration) and more than seventy publications for primary international journals and publishing houses.

His reputation for international law matters is also testified by his inclusion in the prestigious ISDS Academic Forum and his role as visiting professor (in 2019) at the Max Planck Institute for Private International Law in Hamburg (where he conducted extensive research leading to the publication of the book “Imperativeness in private international law. A view from Europe”).
