Penny Thornton trained with Hogan Lovells and qualified into our international Intellectual Property, Media and Technology practice in 2004. Penny has substantial experience in dealing with both contentious and non-contentious intellectual property and matters for clients in the media sector.
She focuses on copyright and related rights, database rights, design rights and confidential information and broadcasting regulation. She has a diploma in UK, U.S. and EU copyright law.
Representative experience
Advising a global digital business on the copyright and regulatory aspects of launching a new service in the UK, including advice on the legality of proposed functionality.
Writing and advising on the provisions and impact of the new EU Copyright Directive, including articles for journals including AIPPI Japan.
Preparing a multi-jurisdictional research brief for a major South African Pay-TV operator on the approach of the regulators in various jurisdictions to convergence and the regulation of VOD services.
Advising a UK music collecting society on its negotiations with a major broadcaster for broadcasting members’ music and strategy relating to a potential reference to the Copyright Tribunal.
Representing FremantleMedia Limited in High Court copyright litigation in relation to the music television programmes Pop Idol and X Factor.
