Support for After-School Baseball Program for Disadvantaged Youth

Our Rio de Janeiro office is sponsoring Project Baseball Escolar, an after-school program that teaches baseball to children in disadvantaged neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro. Our support is providing the organization with the funding needed to expand the program to at least three additional public schools in 2014. In 2013, Project Baseball Escolar worked with 43 children from two public schools.

The program encourages physical activity, teamwork, and self discipline to improve the quality of life for disadvantaged youth and to help them to build character and develop healthy habits while learning new skills and having fun. As an added benefit, portions of the program are taught in English to help the kids develop English language abilities.

In addition to weekly practices and scrimmages, children in Project Baseball Escolar have had the opportunity to meet and learn from coaches and players from Brazil's national amateur league, have participated in a clinic run by MLB International, and even met professional baseball players such as Andre Rienzo, a Brazilian pitcher for the Chicago White Sox.
