As a senior lawyer in our insurance and reinsurance team Charlie Shute advises clients on insurance and reinsurance disputes, including litigation, arbitration and all forms of Alternative Dispute Resolution. He acts for all participants in the (re)insurance industry, including policyholders, insurers, reinsurers, and (re)insurance intermediaries.
Charlie has experience in providing advice to clients on coverage, claims handling and disputes across multiple classes of insurance and reinsurance business, as well as on complex commercial disputes arising in the (re)insurance sector. He has a particular interest in disputes involving the Lloyd's market, the financial services sector and "new" insurance and reinsurance products such as transactional insurance and Insurance Linked Securities.
Charlie also advises clients on regulatory and transactional matters including policy wordings, insurance distribution, sanctions, the mis-sale of insurance products and governmental regulation of the insurance industry.
Prior to joining Hogan Lovells, Charlie was a solicitor in the Sydney office of one of Australia's leading insurance law firms.

Advising financial institutions on the mis-sale of Payment Protection Insurance, and acting in related litigation in the English Courts up to and including the Supreme Court
Acting for a Gibraltar-based motor insurer and its investors in High Court litigation relating to breaches of contract and misuse of trade secrets by a customer-facing intermediary
Acting for an insurer in a large claim against a coverholder for breach of duties in connection with a large book of liability business
Acting for reinsurers in arbitration proceedings relating to reinsurance claims made following the COVID-19 Pandemic
Advising traditional and ILS reinsurers in arbitration proceedings involving complex reinsurance structures in the Lloyd's and companies markets, covering live and run-off reinsurance
Representing AXA Versicherung in its Commercial Court claim for the avoidance of an energy construction treaty on grounds of material non-disclosure
Acting for a private equity policyholder in Commercial Court proceedings arising from claims under a buy-side Warranty & Indemnity Insurance policy, valued at c.EUR75million
