Rupert Sydenham enjoys helping his clients to resolve complex construction and engineering disputes efficiently and effectively.  He particularly values the close working with his clients’ legal, commercial and technical teams that is typically required for successful outcomes.

Rupert heads the firm’s construction and engineering disputes practice in London. Over an international career spanning more than 25 years, he has advised on projects in many industry sectors including transport (railways, airports, roads, ports, cable cars),  traditional and renewable energy (oil, gas, wind, solar, hydro), waste to energy, refineries and petrochemical plants, commercial and residential developments, hospitals, theatre stages and casinos.  He brings his wide experience to helping clients ensure projects are put and stay on track and, where disputes are unavoidable, in the conduct of formal and informal dispute resolution proceedings. He has represented clients in arbitrations under several of the major institutional bodies including particularly the ICC and LCIA.  He has advised on contracts based upon FIDIC, NEC, IChemE, ICE and many other standard forms in common use in the industry. 

Rupert is also ranked in Chambers legal directory for public procurement disputes. He has represented clients in several of the highest profile procurement cases reported in England over the past several years.

Advising the developer of a property development in the Moscow region in London seated LCIA arbitration proceedings in respect of disputes relating to delay and disruption of the project.

Advising an EPCM services provider for a new airport in the Middle East in legal risk management and in London seated ICC arbitration proceedings with the owner concerning numerous airport facilities.

Advising a gas turbine equipment supplier in mediation proceedings with the purchaser concerning allegations of delays in delivery and defects in the turbine.

Advising the contractor under a major PPP contract for maintenance/upgrading of substantial and aging transport infrastructure in England on sets of adjudication proceedings.

Advising the contractor of a prototype nuclear fusion plant in High Court proceedings against a key supplier in respect of a dispute over technical issues concerning a massive flywheel.

Advising the project owner for two hydroelectric projects in Turkey on issues relating to the design and construction of the projects, including time and the owner's entitlement to terminate.

Representing a contractor challenging the award of the contract for the construction of one of the London terminus stations for the HS2 line.

Representing a tenderer challenging the award of a contract for decommissioning of nuclear facilities in High Court proceedings.

Representing a facilities manager in High Court proceedings against a government department in respect of the procurement of facilities management services for the department's estate.
