Derrick focuses his practice on all areas of debt financing, with a particular emphasis on event driven financing and private credit investments.
Derrick regularly advises credit and special situations funds, private equity funds, bank lenders and insolvency office holders across the full credit lifecycle, from new money investments to consensual debt workouts and restructuring, and on enforcements and liquidation. He has a proven track record of delivering results to his clients, and was recognised in the Legal 500 Asia Pacific 2023 Guide as being “very thorough and knowledgeable” and having “an enviable ability to pivot between the finance deals and the restructuring practice seamlessly.”
He has extensive experience working on cross-border transactions, having previously worked in Hogan Lovells’ London office, and as an in-house legal counsel at Goldman Sachs supporting its proprietary trading desk and special situations team.
Representative experience
Advising Oaktree on a number of debt investments in India, including secured notes issued by an Indian resources conglomerate and a convertible loan made to an Indian real estate fund.
Advising an ad hoc committee on the restructuring of the US$200 million notes issued by Yestar Healthcare Holdings Company Limited, a leading medical consumables and equipment operating in the PRC.
Advising Oaktree and the receivers, PwC, in relation to a senior secured loan for the development of Grand Homm and the subsequent receivership over the project.
Advising Kroll as receivers appointed in respect of various real estate projects in Hong Kong and the PRC.
Advising an Asia credit fund on a secured term loan facility with sustainability-linked principles for the financing of the construction of a residential development in Yuen Long, Hong Kong
Advising an Asia credit fund on a bespoke unitranche investment alongside a major US investment bank in relation to a working capital facility to the Li & Fung group
Advising Aztiq HK on a number of financings for its pharmaceutical investments in Taiwan and Malta.
Advising the syndicate of predominantly Asia based lenders on the financing of the construction of 15 data centres by a leading UK data centre provider.
Advising a leading Asia Real Estate Fund on its hybrid capital call facility to fund its investments and working capital needs.
Advising Madison Pacific as club facility agent in respect of the ongoing restructuring of the China Fishery Group under Chapter 11 proceedings and a UK restructuring plan.
Advising an ad hoc committee on the restructuring of the US$500 million notes issued by GCL New Energy Holdings Limited, a leading solar power operating company in the PRC.
Advising a syndicate of banks on the provision of term and revolving facilities to Mandarin Oriental.
Advising a syndicate of lenders on certain facilities extended to the Samsonite group.
Advising Gaw Capital on a facility to finance the renovation and re-branding of The InterContinental Hong Kong into the Regent Hotel.
A syndicate of 25 banks in relation to the US$4.65bn term and revolving facilities to the Tencent group.
Advising the Official Unsecured Creditors Committee of SpeedCast in connection with its US Chapter 11 proceedings.
